What is Arjuna Award?

Introduction

Arjuna Award is the supreme honour, which is awarded to sportspersons by the Government of India. This award is given to such sportspersons who achieves extraordinary position during that year and who has been giving extraordinary performance during the past three years. This award was started in 1961. Arjuna Award includes a statue of Arjuna (Mahabharata) made of Bronze, a diploma and 5 lakh rupees cash. This award is given in the memory of Arjuna of Mahabharata.

The selection committee for Arjuna Award is headed by the Retired Judge of Supreme Court/High Court. It consists of the sportspersons of eminence (Olympians or previous Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna or Arjuna Awardees), 3 sports journalists/Experts/Commentators,1 sportsperson of eminence/sports administrator/sports expert belonging to parasports, 1 sports administrator, 1 ex-officio member (Director General, Sports Authority of India) and one Member Secretory [Joint Secretory (Sports), Department of Sports].


Rules for Arjuna Award

Following are the rules for bestowing Arjuna Awards:

  1.  Its main aim is to ameliorate the standard of sports in the country.
  2.  The Govt. of India demands the list of sportspersons from the National               Sports Federations which are recognised by the Govt. of India. This list is           submitted  every year on a fixed date. 
  3.  Generally this award is given to one player of a game but it can also be             given to a female player of the same game.
  4.  The fixed date can be extended by the Govt. of India.
  5.  The Govt. of India forms a special committee which vividly inspects the list 
       of players already sent by various federations of sports. After proper                 inspection, the special committee sends this list to the Govt. of India.
  6.  If the Govt. of India does not receive any list from the sports federations in         any year, then it may award any specific player for that year.
  7.  Any sports federation can send a list of three players to the Govt. of India.
       Though the Govt. of India gives award to only one player but a female               player can also be awarded. So maximum two players, i.e., one male and           one female can be selected for the award from the game.
  8.  The final decision regarding Arjuna Award lies with the Govt. of India.
  9.  The Govt. of India decides the date and venue for the presentation of the 
       Arjuna Award.
10.  Arjuna Award can not be presented to a player, second time.
11.  Arjuna Award can be given posthumously.
12.  The Govt. of India can nullify the award of any sportsperson.
13.  The decision of the Govt. of India is the last and final regarding these rules.
       There can not be any hearing about such cases.
14.  The individual, whose name is recommended for the Arjuna Award should           obey these rules.
15.  The total no. of Arjuna Awards are restricted to 15, one award in each               discipline. The no. could go up if the Indian sportspersons do well at                   international events like Olympics, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games.

Nominations

The nominations for the award will be invited by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports from all National Sports Federations recognised by the Govt. of India, Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and State/Union Territory governments in the month of January each year. As per the revised scheme, the last date for the reciept of nominations will be 31st May of the same year.
